The insurance is mainly sold by need. When someone takes a loan, the finance company insists on insurance. Alternatively big corporates factory owners and people doing business take insurance as they feel the need. Sometimes on insistence of Agents, insurance is taken. The law of the land also adds to insurance like compulsory third party insurance for all motor vehicles and compulsory insurance for people dealing in hazardous goods (manufacturing, trading, transport or storage). This is public liability insurance in pursuance of PLI Act, 1991. Similarly employer will take insurance for his or her workers.
We know very well that insurance is a contract of intangibility, and there is no immediate profit in it. Further, the common perception is that it is not easy to get the insurance claim. Hence, the role of Surveyor has become very important, because a lot of expectations are there from the Surveyor who first meets the client when he is in trouble. The fair settlement and prompt service given by Surveyor helps the insurance company to keep its reputation high. As of date, the surveyor is required to assess the loss if it is more than Rs 50000 in motor and Rs 100000 in case of other insurances. it was Rs 20000/- However company may if they wish to do so, arrange report from surveyor where loss is below Rs 50000/ also. Role of surveyor is of great importance. He is having quasi judicial duties as he is suppose to do the justice between insurer and insured on the basis of his technical knowledge in accordance with the terms and conditions of policy or contract. The insurance contract is a legal document and claim is to be settled on the basis of contract only. The insured is required to give notice of claim (intimation) immediately upon happening of loss and then within next 15 days of time, he should submit all proof evidence and bills in support. The surveyor will verify in his visit primarily the policy details, coverage, scope etc. Then nature of loss and extent of loss. His main job is to establish the cause of loss and to see if it comes under the scope of policy. After doing necessary verification etc, the next big step a surveyor would take is to arrange for segration of damaged stock, machinery etc. so that it can be saved from further damage. Proper segragation and disposal of salvage will be fruitful to both insured and insurer. The surveyor will also verify as whether insurable interest is there and that there was no breach of condition by the insured. He will verify all details supplied by insured in the claim form, check the available records like accounts, bank statement etc in order to cross check with the insureds demand of claim. Discussing with insured, he will decide as what could be repaired, replaced or reinstated. Thereafter he would calculate the loss (assessment) which is followed by reporting (survey report) but before going to write for the survey report he would check fo admissibility of the claim also. If needed he can arrange for investigation, he can appoint any expert after clearance from insurance company, wherever the services of expert is needed. PRINCIPAL CONSTRAINED FACED BY SURVEYOR ARE….1. iNTERPERSONAL HUM AN RELATIONS ELEMENTS, As surveyor he is supposed to deal with different kind of people and professionals like repairers, garage owners etc, it is required that he should deal the situation and event with great understanding of human psychology. He should learn to apply his best negotiation skills while dealing with the claimaints. Tactful handling is the main skill of a surveyor. SECOND REQUIRED AREA IS HIS KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE…he is supposed to keep updated for all information of the market, recent happenings, technological changes taking place etc. THIRDLY THE CONTRACTUAL ELEMENT, a surveyor needs to understand the whole contract and he should be able to interpret policy conditions in the most transparent manner and in its absolute fairness. FOURTHLY THE ELEMNET OF ADMINSTRATIVE ACTION, this means he should be able to present his report in such a way that officer sitting in the office feels that he is actually present o the spot of accident and also present on the area where repair wasgoing on. Larger organisation may be troublesome for surveyor as obtaining information and documents is a difficult task. As acidents are not occurring at fixed time, so surveyor may be very busy on some occasions or might be without work for some time. He should adjust with the industry, clients etc to give his best in the prevailing situations.
